Although we can’t see it, the ozone layer is one of the most important natural barriers protecting life on Earth<\/strong>. It is found primarily in the stratosphere, dozens of kilometers above the surface, and its main function is to absorb much of the most harmful ultraviolet radiation<\/strong> coming from the sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In simple terms, it works like a natural filter<\/strong>. Without this protection, people, animals, plants, and crops would be far more exposed to UV-B radiation, which is associated with damage to the skin, eyes, and different ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Exactly Is Ozone?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ozone is a gas made up of three oxygen atoms<\/strong>. When concentrated in the upper layers of the atmosphere, it plays a protective role<\/strong>, helping block between 97% and 99% of ultraviolet-B radiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem began when certain human-made gases reached this part of the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Are CFCs, and Why Were They a Problem?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

CFCs, or chlorofluorocarbons, were used for decades in refrigerators, air-conditioning systems, aerosols, and foams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They seemed extremely useful, but once they reached the stratosphere, they could release chlorine and contribute to the destruction of ozone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1974, scientists Mario Molina and Sherwood Rowland warned about this risk<\/strong>. Their research helped change the way the world understood these gases and, years later, helped drive international agreements to reduce their use<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The World Could Have Been Much Hotter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most surprising facts is that protecting the ozone layer also helped slow global warming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scientific simulations show that if CFC levels had continued to rise unchecked, ultraviolet radiation would have seriously damaged trees, plants, and soils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This would have reduced their ability to absorb carbon and could have resulted in 580 billion metric tons less carbon being stored in the biosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result would have been a planet with more than 2.5\u00b0C (4.5\u00b0F) of additional warming<\/strong> by the end of the century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mexico Also Played an Important Role<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mexico has eliminated around 99% of its peak consumption of ozone-depleting substances<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2005, the country stopped consuming CFCs and closed a major production facility. In 2014, it also eliminated the agricultural use of methyl bromide, another substance that damages the ozone layer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next goal is to complete the phaseout of HCFCs by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Will the Ozone Layer Recover?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Recovery is already underway, although it will take time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If current policies remain in place, the ozone layer is expected to return to approximately 1980 levels by 2040 across much of the planet<\/strong>, around 2045 in the Arctic<\/strong>, and close to 2066 in Antarctica<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Can We Do to Help?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Although the biggest decisions depend on governments and industries, there are also everyday actions that can help keep this progress moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most important is to properly maintain refrigerators and air-conditioning systems<\/strong>, since some older appliances may contain refrigerants that should not be released directly into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it’s time to dispose of one of these appliances, the best option is to take it to a specialized center or service that can properly recover and handle the refrigerant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can also choose more efficient appliances and technologies that use refrigerants with a lower environmental impact<\/strong>, as well as reduce unnecessary energy consumption<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there is something less obvious but just as important: staying informed<\/strong>. The recovery of the ozone layer shows that consumer choices, regulation, and technological advances can work together when there is awareness of a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The health of our planet can also be seen through much smaller signals. Butterflies, for example, can reveal important changes in ecosystems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
